Tauranga - City of the Future

Tauranga is a strong, contemporary, vibrant city - the heart of the Bay of Plenty.

Tauranga’s City Centre Strategy has been developed for future growth and sustainability, ensuring the Tauranga continues to attract and retain business and talent, creates high value employment and stimulates economic growth.

The strategy will build of the city’s commercial, cultural, retail, arts, educational and entertainment ‘precincts’, closely linking them so that more people come into the city centre to work, shop and enjoy the amenities after hours.

To deliver a truly unique and desirable city of the future, implementation of the City Centre Strategy is led by Priority One in partnership with Tauranga City Council, Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Creative Tauranga, the Property Council, Tauranga Mainstreet and the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Partnership comprising University of Waikato, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi.

University campus

The unique Bay of Plenty Tertiary Partnership, involving the University of Waikato, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, is driving the development of a tertiary precinct in Tauranga’s city centre. Centerpiece is a planned research-led campus, providing degree and post graduate education and research to augment the range of pre-degree courses currently on offer. With a focus on innovation and R&D, particularly in the marine, ICT and material science sectors, Tauranga’s reputation as a hub for entrepreneurial talent is set to grow.

Stemming from the tertiary campus are further investment and development opportunities for student housing and accommodation, cafes and retail precincts.

Hotel and conference facility

The opportunity currently exists to showcase Tauranga’s city centre and surrounds to domestic and international guests and conference delegates with an international hotel in the heart of the city.

Five-star accommodation, event and conference facilities will provide quality facilities for Bay of Plenty residents and the business community and attract inbound conference trade from domestic centres such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

An internationally recognised conference and events centre will firmly position Tauranga on the international events and conference schedule and drive tourism and investment.

Future developments

Local authorities actively encourage investment in the city centre and work closely with planners and developers to bring ideas to fruition.

The creation of a premier urban living environment in the inner city will add significantly to the vibrancy of Tauranga city centre, attract investment and talent, increase retail spend, stimulate cultural events and activities, and encourage the development of key commercial sites.

With major developments underway there are also steps in place to ensure the city centre remains pedestrian friendly and fully accessible. Car parking, public transport and cycle ways are part of the broader development plan.

Tauranga really has it all - centrally located, great climate, first-rate infrastructure, a world class port, fabulous lifestyle and excellent business and investment opportunities. Tauranga, city of the future.
