Population: 120,000

At fifth largest among New Zealand cities, Tauranga is one of New Zealand's fastest growing urban areas, with many young professionals choosing to settle in the area.

Tauranga is surrounded by one of the largest natural harbours in New Zealand, long white beaches and the Kaimai mountain ranges to the west, with the volcanic cone of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) looking over the city. It is situated in the sunny Bay of Plenty, with a tropical climate and around 2,400 hours of sunshine a year. Life in Tauranga centres around the water and locals enjoy a range of outdoor recreational activities including swimming, surfing, fishing, diving, kayaking, kitesurfing, golf, tramping and mountain biking. Each summer many cruise ships visit the harbour and two large marinas hold over 1,000 yachts and launches.

The Strand waterfront has been redeveloped and is now a hub of activity with cafés, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, a children’s play area and cultural artwork. Every year around Easter, the National Jazz Festival takes place with dozens of live acts, top notch cuisine and wines from local vineyards and wineries.

Much of the countryside surrounding Tauranga is horticultural land, and the area is known for growing kiwifruit, avocados and tangelos.
